The '''jearth''' (Dears modernus), also called '''modern jearth''', is a species (or, according to another classification, a subgenus) of the genus Dears, a member of the Felidae family in the order Carnivora. Compared to other so-called "intelligent" species, it spread across Earth more recently: 20,000 years ago, its range encompassed all territories except the continent of [[Aznata]], and only 10,000 years ago jearths inhabited Aznata too. It differs strikingly from other felines in many anatomical features, as well as in its highly developed material and immaterial culture, its capacity for articulate speech, and its developed abstract thinking.
Unlike the genus ''Homo'', which comprises three "intelligent" species ([[human]]s, [[elf|elves]], and [[dwarf|dwarves]]), the modern dearth is the only "intelligent" species in its genus.
